Every Brilliant Thing

In 2019 as a result of a co-production of companies Rei Sem Roupa and Mente de Cão, Jaime Mears and Joana Pupo took a hold of British writer Duncan Macmillan’s - Every Brilliant Thing, translating it into Portuguese as Todas as Coisas Extraodinárias with the aim of creating two solos from the same piece, in the respective languages of each actress.

Mounting Macmillan’s beautiful piece on depression and suicide was a means to open up taboo themes around mental health (in a heathy way) and provide an alternative space for conversations for young people to communicate their experiences, concerns and ideas.

In 2021 the project won financial support from the Portuguese Republic – Ministery of Culture, through the program Garantir Cultura with endorsement from the National Program for mental health (DGS).

As Mears and Pupo wished to align their project as closely as possible with the needs of their target audience, they designed a five month long project with students from Liceu Camões in Lisbon, co facilitated by Cultural mediator and psychologist Susana Alves with specific consulting from psychologist specialized in work with adolescents: Maria João Regala.

In 2022 Every Brilliant Thing and Todas as Coisas Extraordinárias played in conferences and Mental Health Festivals, libraries, a range of secondary schools, Theatres and alternative performance venues and is continuing to attract wonderful reviews.
